Important Considerations About Your Health Care Coverage

Because part-time associates are not eligible for Belk medical coverage, consider these options to ensure you have medical coverage:

  • If your spouse’s/domestic partner’s employer offers health insurance, you may be able to enroll yourself and your eligible dependents in his or her plan.
  • Purchase your health insurance through the health insurance marketplace (or exchange). The health care reform law says each state must offer a health insurance marketplace, sometimes called a public exchange.
    • Health insurance marketplaces are available in each state and are operated by the state, by the federal government or through a partnership between the state and the federal government.
    • If you purchase health coverage through an exchange, you may be eligible for financial help (a “subsidy”). For certain low- and middle-income people who are not eligible for comprehensive, affordable health coverage from their or their spouse’s/domestic partner’s employer, the federal government will offer financial help in paying for health insurance purchased through a health insurance marketplace.
    • Since you are not eligible for coverage through a Belk health plan, you may be eligible for a subsidy depending on your household income; it’s not just your income that counts, but the combined income of everyone in your home. You can contact the health insurance marketplace in your state to see if you qualify for a subsidy. Check www.healthcare.gov, the website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to get contact information for the health insurance marketplace in your state.
    • Check to see if you qualify for Medicaid benefits. Under the health care reform law, eligibility for Medicaid is expanding to include more people in many states. Even if you did not qualify before, you may have new options to enroll in Medicaid now. Visit www.medicaid.gov for more information.
    • If you are under age 26 and your parent’s employer offers health insurance, he or she can enroll you.

Due to Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements, part-time associates who average at least 30 hours per week or 130 hours in a month will become eligible for medical coverage and supplemental health benefits, in addition to the benefits listed here. Belk will send you a letter to inform you of your medical plan eligibility if it occurs mid-year.
